How to Use Your Word Processor

Customizing the Grammar and Style Tool

Word processing programs such as Microsoft Word allow you to select the rules that are used when you check the grammar, punctuation, and style of a document. If you find that your grammar and style checking tool is giving you bad advice in a particular area, turn that rule off. To turn off a rule in Microsoft Word:

  1. Click on the TOOLS > OPTIONS menu command (in Windows) or the OPTIONS > PREFERENCES menu (on the Mac).
  2. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab in the Options dialog box.
  3. Click on the Settings button.
  4. Remove the checks from boxes in front of areas you want to ignore.
