Perhaps the most well-known and influential work of literature of this type is Jacob Cats's book Houwelyck, or Marriage. Published in 1625, this was a comprehensive reference book for women of all ages, but especially young women, regarding matters of marriage and family. Although many other similar books were being published in the Netherlands and England during this period, Cats's work is perhaps the most extensive; it even contained an alphabetical index for quick reference (Franits, "Paragons" 5).

In the example on the right, Jenna has summarized Jacob Cats's book Houwelyck. And because she learned about Houwelyck in Wayne Franits's book Paragons of Virtue, she cites Franits as the source.
