A STUDENTS ONLINE GUIDE TO HISTORY
by Jules Benjamin
Adapted for the Bedford/St. Martin's research site by Jules R. Benjamin.
Based on A Student's Guide to History, 8th edition (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2000)
About This Site
I have created this brief online version of my book to assist students who are new to the study of history. If you wish, you can read the online book screen by screen. For direct access to a particular topic click on the link closest to your interest.
The TABLE OF TOPICS that appears below has four major headings:
STUDY ASSIGNMENTS IN HISTORY COURSES
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS IN HISTORY COURSES
HOW TO RESEARCH A HISTORY TOPIC
HOW TO WRITE A HISTORY PAPER
Think of these headings as the "chapters" of this online "book". When you click on a major heading, you will go to the first topic screen for that heading.
The individual topics listed below the major headings link to brief explanations of this particular topic only. From each topic screen, you can move "back" or "next" to adjacent topics. In many topic screens you will find underlined terms that are links to non-sequential screens. All bolded and underlined terms are glossary items (glossary explained below). These topic screens cover more than sixty kinds of history assignments and address everything from reading textbooks to writing footnotes. Think of the headings and topic links as the table of contents for the online version of the print book.
This site also features an online glossary composed of internal links. On many topic screens you will encounter highlighted terms that when clicked will take you to that term's definition on the glossary page. When you have mastered the meaning of the term, click "Back" on your browser and you will return to the topic you were reading. From any topic screen, click on the "Guide" icon located in the upper right hand corner to return to the TABLE OF TOPICS.
For more detailed advice on each of these topics, see the print version of A Student's Guide to History, 8th edition. Following each heading in the online TABLE OF TOPICS are the pages in the latest edition of A Student's Guide to History where the topic is covered in greater detail. If you have specific questions for me, send email to GuidetoHistory8@bedfordstmartins.com and I will try to answer them.
