BIOGRAPHY
Sant’Anna was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and became a journalist at the early age of seventeen. He earned a Ph.D. in literature (1969) from the Federal University, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He has taught at many universities, among them the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio. He has also been a visiting professor at UCLA, the University of Iowa, the University of Texas, and the Universities of Koln (Germany) and Aix-en-Provence (France). An essayist, fiction writer, and poet, Sant’Anna made a particular impression on his countrymen with a 1980 poem “Que país é este” (What Kind of Nation Is This?), published on the political page of a popular newspaper. The poem questioned dictatorial censorship and its effect on Brazilian identity. He pointed out in Popular Music and Modern Brazilian Poetry (1978) that the lyrics of popular music had replaced the political writings of the intellectuals who were forced into exile by the dictatorship and, further, had become the vehicle for social and aesthetic expression usually provided by poetry. Loving Cannibalism (1984) is a psychoanalytic reading of Western love poetry. His considerable publications include examinations of political culture and modern art, as well as modern literature.
