After earning a B.A. from the University of the South in Sewanee, he went on to earn an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. (1979) from Louisiana State University. His poetry chapbook, Domestic of the Outer Banks, was published in 1980. Several volumes followed, among them Since the Noon Mail Stopped (1997) and Unarmed and Dangerous (2000). His poetry has been anthologized in Anthology of Magazine Verse and Yearbook of American Poetry for both 1979 and 1980. He was awarded a poetry prize by Sewanee Review (1969) and has been a fellow at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. He has taught in the graduate program of the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars, where he was Elliott Coleman Professor of Poetry. Currently, he serves as Carlton Professor of English at the University of the South, where he teaches poetry, and where he founded and now directs the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. |
