BIOGRAPHY
Barry Holstun Lopez (b. 1945). Born in Port Chester, New York, Lopez graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and earned a graduate degree there in 1968. He went on to further graduate study at the University of Oregon (1969-1970).

His earliest book, Desert Notes: Reflections in the Eye of a Raven (1976), was the first of a trilogy which includes River Notes: The Dance of Herons (1979) and Field Notes: The Grace Note of the Canyon Wren (1994). Keenly interested in the traditions of the Northwest Indians, as well as natural history, he published a collection of Indian legends, Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with His Daughter (1977), and a nonfiction study, Of Wolves and Men (1978). A collection of short stories, Winter Count (1981), reveals how deeply Lopez feels about the American Indian experience, as does his children's book based on Indian traditions, Crow and Weasel (1990). Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape appeared in 1986.

Lopez's skill as a photographer is evident in the illustrations included in several of his works. His essays are gathered together in The Rediscovery of North America (1991).
