PREFACE

Our idea for the first edition of this bibliography began with Patricia Bizzell, Bruce Herzberg, and Nedra Reynolds's valuable work in The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Writing. In 2000, as co-chairs of the Conference on Basic Writing (CBW), we asked ourselves why there wasn't a similarly useful resource for teachers of basic writing. We talked about this at some length between ourselves and with members of the CBW; ultimately, we decided we should have a bibliography of our own. And in 2002, thanks to numerous CBW volunteers and Bedford/St. Martin's, the first edition of The Bedford Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing was published.

In 2005 the CBW celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary as an organization. To mark this milestone, we undertook the second edition of the Bibliography, turning our focus from defining what basic writing is and who basic writers are to tracing how the field has developed and what its future may hold. To that end, we include on pp. 000-000 Karen S. Uehling's "The Conference on Basic Writing: 1980-2005," a history of the organization we honor with this edition of the Bibliography. Additionally, the work annotated in this volume gathers together the key discursive threads about basic writing that have contributed to the various and sometimes-disparate narratives about the field.

There have been pivotal moments, particularly in the last fifteen years, when the field's quest for a history and a cohesive narrative of its self have been particularly visible. The debate over the legacy of Mina Shaughnessy and other basic writing pioneers is one such moment (see Gunner, Lu, and Maher); another is the debate over mainstreaming (see Adams, Bartholomae, Greenberg, and Rodby and Fox); yet another debate concerns the purpose of basic writing classes (see Adams, Collins, Greenberg, Gilyard, and Shor). Within these pages, we attempt to catalog the discussions that have and continue to shape the field of basic writing.

By compiling the work developed specifically for, and by, basic writing teacher-researchers, it is our hope that the second edition of this Bibliography will continue be an important and useful resource for anyone interested in the field of basic writing, as well as a document, an artifact, that contributes to the field's understanding of its self—its past, present, and future.

The hard work of the 136 teachers who annotated the 321 entries made the second edition of The Bibliography for Teachers of Basic Writing possible. We list their names here as contributing editors and hope that one day we can thank each one of them personally.

We owe special thanks to Karen S. Uehling, former CBW co-chair, for so kindly expanding and allowing us to include her history of the CBW, as well as to the Center for Research on Developmental Education and Urban Literacy for their permission to reprint this adapted history. At Bedford/St. Martin's, we wish to thank Nancy Perry, who has been absolutely wonderful to work with on this project, from its inception through this second edition. We also are grateful to Gregory S. Johnson for his prompt, efficient, and excellent editing of both editions—and his good cheer through many revisions. We also wish to thank Joan Feinberg and Denise Wydra for their continued support of the Bibliography. At Arizona State University, our thanks also go to Dan Bivona, Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, for his support, and to Talitha Benjamin, who helped with editing and cross-checking the annotations.
